OSHA has announced a new National Emphasis Program (NEP) to on specific hazards in nursing and personal care facilities with high injury and illness rates.
"Nursing and personal care facilities are a growing industry where hazards are known and effective controls are available,"
said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "The industry also ranks among the highest in terms of injuries and illnesses, with rates about 2 ½ times that of all other general industries. By focusing on specific hazards associated with nursing and personal care facilities, we can help bring those rates down."

Resident handling, and slips, trips and falls account for the majority of injuries suffered by nursing home workers.

The above report from the USA highlights a problem that is equally serious here in the UK.
One key area to address to manage these risks is the type and quality of surfaces in and around care homes.
At Absolutely Safe Surfaces we address the issue of safety surfacing in several ways.

  • All our surfaces are seamless and sealed.
  • They are also rubberised and slip resistant
  • They are resilient and meet the European Standard EN 1177 for children’s playground safety surfaces.
  • The technology used at Absolutely Safe Surfaces offers a weatherproof slip free surface to minimise the risk of a trip or fall.
  • The resilient nature of the surface ensures the minimum damage to patient or staff should there be a fall.
